Promotion: Performance vs Seniority Essay

According to the latest statistics published in the New York Times a 70 percent of the American workers think that promotions have to be based on performance rather than promotions by seniority. The first thing that needs to be said is that it is a personal decision. In my opinion, promotions have to be based on performance, because workers have good incentives, the best employees deserve the better positions quickly and the enterprises can have good employees. My first argument suggests that modern enterprise needs to produce more goods without spend money and time. The enterprises have to hire the best employees who need good incentives to work in them. The promotions by good performance rather than by seniority are very interesting for a young professional, because if he works well, he can get a better position in the company. For example, some companies have programs to hire young talent professionals. Second to take into account is that if the better employees had the opportunity to sit in a high position in the company early, they would have a better performance rather than another senior employee. To illustrate this point one need only refer to the several polls that some economics’ magazines have taken in successful companies and these polls show there are more young and capable workers than ever in the past, because there are a program of promotions by performance. Third, equally relevant to the issue are the companies with promotions base on good work have a better laborer climate. Enterprises give good incentives to hire capable workers and they give their better work. They can be happy in the company. Thus, I prefer to promotions have to be based in a good performance rather than promotions by seniority, in the due to the fact, worker have a good incentives, the best employees deserve the better positions quickly and the enterprises can have good employees.

Walter's opportunities outside the United States and The Far East are extremely successful, while ventures within Germany as well as South Korea had been unsuccessful.IV. Question 1 A goal for a lot of today's procedures managers is to obtain the right mixture of technology as well as management many efficiently create goods as well as services. Using radio-frequency id (REID), a little electronic label on individual bits of men's clothes, including denim Jeans, underwear, and socks may be the main technology automation. The labels emit the weak stereo signa l that allows employees to understand what dimensions are missing about the shelf as well as what items can e found in the share room.Radio-frequency id tags may identify as well as track pallets or even cases associated with goods, and also the move in order to individual products. Most merchants had utilized RIFF and then track pallets or even cases associated with goods, and also the move in order to individual products has elevated concerns more than potential invasions associated with privacy. Advanced it makes Just-in-time stock management function seamlessly, however it has additionally transformed management in several other methods. An organization's it (IT) includes the equipment, software, telecoms, database administration, and additional technologies this uses in order to chain information and make sure they are available as information with regard to organizational choice making. Generally, information technologies has good implications for that practice associated with management. (New Period of Administration, Richard M. Daft, tenth edition, 2012) The improvement of computer-based info systems provides alternatives towards the traditional up and down organizational hierarchy around since the actual sass.By giving managers along with high-quality, well-timed, relevant, as well as relatively total information, management info systems possess reduced the requirement for high management hierarchies. Horizontal info flows are actually viable, supplanting the actual flow associated with information in one department upward through administration layers after which back right down to another division. RIFF is a solution to capture data in regards to a single object without needing human tread the information. The execution of RIFF labels at pallet as well as case degree, Wall- Mart has the capacity to identify as well as track these products as it gets to their arouses till shelving in the giant retailer' (RIFF Diary, 2005). Wall-Mart thought that it wil l likely be a typical technology within the next decade, such as the barded since it was popularized through them within the early 80 (Smith, 2005) . Nevertheless, there aren't many business are prepared to switch in the existing barded system because of the cost which might disrupt Wall-Mart implementations.Usually, barded is actually embedded using the product packaging or styles are fairly free. Although Wall-Mart is actually leading the near future of this particular technology, it's forcing providers to burden high of the price. There tend to be several crucial benefits which Wall-Mart and also the suppliers can acquire. RIFF may reduce out-of-stocks; help to make automated purchase fulfillment, enhanced inventory, item tracking, reduce shrinking and enhance product shipping time by giving visibility to the location associated with goods along with RIFF labels. It is about tracking' regardless of whether it within or beyond Wall-Mart, the requirement to know the merchandise wher eabouts is essential. Smith (2005) describe this as a good consideration theft. For instance if a lot of product shifting out the actual shelf, it'll end an indication to the nearby digital camera to notify security to make sure these items aren't stolen. Based on Wall-Mart's CIO Linda Dill man, RIFF has boost the efficiency within the supply string where they've been able in order to restock RIFF- tagged items 3 times as quickly as non-tagged products (RIFF Diary, 2008).Wall-Mart has become able to enhance their durability program in order to encourage recycle by utilizing RIFF. This is a result of the study, write as well as storage capability; recycling companies may use this RIFF to straighten out the materials that may be cycled better and effectively. This recycling where possible companies may ship away the material to the Manufacturers which slow up the utilization associated with new materials. Therefore Wall-Mart isn't Just focusing upon financial benefits however the ecos ystem too.It is more costly to obtain new client than keeping current clients (Roth, 2004). Using RIFF within Wall-Mart possess the most strategically important in working with customer fulfillment. Smith (2005) learned that Wall-Mart offers improve their own customer encounter and devotion by having the ability to track nonuser's behavior and purchasing patterns; to maintain products as well as deliveries upon shelf in due time. It additionally helps consumers within the speed associated with purchase where a customer's check-out because simple because walking away the shop.As customer go by the self-service check-out counter-top, the readers receives the information from the merchandise and charge the client credit greeting card. Using 2 different techniques, it offers reduced line time from the consumer. Thus Wall-Mart mixing its RIFF technology using the CRM bundle can enhance customer support. There additionally some danger associate applying RIFF technologies, mainly privateer s issues as well as cyber horror. It can be done for rivals to grab information concerning shipments, logistics businesses, cost & delicate information and so on.Since the ability source originates from the readers not the actual tag, hackers can certainly infiltrate delicate information via this nonaggression tags . Based on Smith (2005), Wall-Mart offers made their own tag along with limited range to see and create capability with regard to security objective. Privacy problems in USA are used very critically by customer advocacy organizations. Their issues were that when the consumer simply leaves the shop, that the actual tag can be monitored. They believe it will likely be an intrusion of privateers as big corporation may monitor their own activity. Based on Smith (2005) you will find researches done to produce blocker label at customer level, however the result continues to be unknown. Consequently, Wall-Mart ought to revise these types of factors before any more allegations lat er on. Wall-Mart established fact to follow IT national infrastructure since 1974 started using computer systems for stock control. Lining,Wall-Mart is among the major motorists behind the actual RIFF earlier adoption as well as implementation had been they introduced a 3 year technical compliance arrange for its best 300 suppliers' (Espies, Master, & Wilson, 2004). They could provide each one of these services because of their generally ‘ provide chain management that is their crucial success element (KEF) within the retail company (AS Investigation, 2009). Therefore implementing RIFF technologies will considerably improve control within the supply string management to satisfy customer needs. Splay in the shelf region. It's saved above ledge area where it will likely be retrieve in the event that products upon shelf go out. When an item is purchased with a customer, the RIFF readers at check-out counter tops will browse the purchase and become sent towards the Electronic Info rmation Interchange (DEED') Program called List Link (Blanchard & Com, 2008). The info will end up being passed towards the suppliers, sales information program, Tex Ions Products and CRM info system. Wall- Mart shares real-time information along with suppliers with regard to better purchasing accuracy, and transparency through the supply string, particularly stock usability as well as for invoicing as well as payments ‘ (Blanchard & Com, 2008)Data's which are sent towards the Customer Romantic relationship Management is going to be used with regard to data mining to create forecast. Marketing supervisors in Wall-Mart utilized data-mine technology to build up replenishment plans for his or her suppliers as well as adjust the actual composition associated with market containers in person chains (Shapiro, 2007).Additionally they can find out about the behavior of the customers of the purchase choice and delivering pattern. Therefore they are able to plan with regard to peak mont hs, to cake sure that the correct materials, supplies as well as personnel have been in the correct place in the right period. This declaration suggest a variety of metrics that could be used to track customer support by the supplier, such as percentage on- time transport, percentage associated with complete transport and portion of transport with suitable qualities' (Shapiro, 2007).If your product is lower in stock, the EDI program will notify the shop manager to create purchases via Tex Ions gadget. At the same time frame, the data is going to be sent in order to suppliers in order to alert these phones start manufacturing. Simultaneously, the information also is delivered to the sales system may than help to make confirmation for that request buy. Once the actual request may be approved, supplier can begin to deliver. To enhance the time associated with product appearance, passive RIFF which are place may transmit the present location in order to Wall-Mart's EDI program. This prov ide great comfort and ease to supervisors to precisely know in which the product location and in a position to inform the shoppers the real date the merchandise will be accessible. This brand new technology aid Walter's capability to track the actual inventory as well as increasing the actual rate in order to replenish the merchandise exactly instantly and additionally, it provide the information to allow employee know in which the product is and also the time in order to replenish the merchandise more effectiveness exactly.Using the RIFF, Walter not Just reduce the actual tracking cost but additionally increase the actual rate associated with in share Besides, Walter also obtain the benefit from obtain the data to understand the that product marketing effectiveness in the chains' information, to cutting sold-out sale deficits, ND overstock costs (P. Fraser, 2006) Quite simply, Walter improvement associated with inventory management using the RIFF to lessen the price losing dependin g on sold-out and skip helped within the backroom as well as increases a chance to track the actual inventory as well as support them immediately as well as exactly. However as the reduce the actual percent from sold-out it additionally cost seventeen cents cost for every item to make use of FRI. label (P. Fraser, 2006). Within article Wall-Mart WALL-MART can make its providers more near to the customer since the system also offers the data for that manufacturer, provider, to knowing the customer's preferences and also to monitor inventory and also the stock relocated in every chain. It additionally helps the actual supplier to achieve the possibility in order to redesign as well as packaging their own product decreasing process price (Ramsey, 2004) Wall-Mart produce the win-win situation to create the itself and it is supplier to lessen the cost using the supply string with brand new technology tool to create supply string more effectiveness and conserve to period and cash from neede d cost additionally by provide data discussing it links the merchandise desired between your customer as well as product organization than prior to.V. Question 2 The achievement of Wall-Mart is mainly because of it's seem managerial decisions and also the innovative execution of sustainability ways of dramatically slow up the company's effect on the worldwide environment and in order to become â€Å"the best and revolutionary company within the world†. The organization believed within the three primary principles that's â€Å"To end up being supplied 100 % by green energy; to reduce zero waste materials; and to market products which sustaining the resources and also the environment. The actual gist from the decision execution by Wall-Mart is based on its capability to build a good working romantic relationship with each suppliers as well as employees, being attentive to the majority of intricate details available layout as well as necessary retailing techniques, capitalizing in most cost preserving technique, and developing a high overall performance spirit. Below are a few of the important methods implemented through Wall-Mart that have been responsible because of its success?Among its very first initiative had been to release a marketing campaign to motivate its suppliers to supply environment pleasant and secure products within recyclable or even biodegradable product packaging at absolutely no Additional price. Wall-Mart meant to influence its suppliers to invest more upon R&D in order to find the actual safer settings of digesting and packing which too without having passing the price on for them. This wasn't a method indented to create it wealthy, but it had been a started like a campaign with regard to environmental advantage and that earned those lots of good may among environmentalist.Wall-Mart additionally started making â€Å"green† ledge tags in order to mark these products the suppliers created which were environmentally pleasant. T his was among its very first step in the direction of sustainability. But gradually company lost tabs on its main strategic focal points. Wall-Mart quickly realized this particular and began to revamp its sustainable strategy in order to make it to become long enduring and seriously embed this in its operations because envisaged through Scott.Scott guide the sustainability technique to keep environmentally friendly improvements tightly in conjunction with the company value as well as profitability for that strategy to achieve success in addition to challenged themselves to locate new methods to drive measurable outcomes. Several plans were considered and several of that had larger ideas how Wall-Mart might profitably decrease environmental effects. In the first proposals submit Wall-Mart desired to differentiate by itself from its competition, maintain the license to develop, and stay consistent in through perusing a good offensive technique. The administration realized which sustain ability might represents the largest opportunity for that 21st hundred years and suggested that Wall-Mart and it is complex provide chain might become much more efficient through making its operations much more environment pleasant. They thought if durability was to become taken critically, it meant not only the atmosphere and but additionally includes healthcare, wages, ethical finding and globalization as well as everything in general. With this in your mind Wall-Mart began its marketing campaign initially concentrating on the atmosphere. Large a part of it initiatives were spent dealing with the numerous Government as well as Environmental agencies to recognize which associated with its items and procedures created finest environmental effects. After it's large size investigation Wall-Mart simplified down the issue to 3 main areas: Power, Waste as well as Products, and decided it would concentrate its environment goals with regard to reducing the actual Walter's effect on the atmo sphere.Increasing power efficiency, shifting to green energy, and decreasing waste within retail procedures were chose to be the actual direct objectives -?goals that may be achieved through making changes which were within Wall-Mart's much more immediate manage. It recognized that supplying more environmentally friendly products had been a roundabout goal which may also need the participation of Wall-Mart providers and their assistance to accomplish. Wall- Mart also found that the easiest method to generate great will would be to serve society since it did for that hurricane Kari sufferers. It positively participated in assisting provide relief towards the people associated with New Orleans and it is surrounding areas consequently earned the actual trust of each and every one. Wall- Mart intends to supply suppliers along with Valuable understanding and procedure assistance via relationships along with Nags within its systems. Wall-Mart setup compliance business that supervised suppl ier overall performance in China along with other countries all over the world.Wall-Mart gripes audit primarily centered on safety and health issues also it measured providers against its four recognized metrics- Drinking water treatment, Waste materials management, Prohibited chemicals as well as air emissions. Improvement within seafood network all over the world was permitted through feasible though execution of MASC.- certified certifying companies. MESS accreditation was trusted to 3rd parties that audited as well as ratified fisheries as well as processes to ensure products had been managed sustainable through boat in order to plate.MESS accreditation firstly was to deal with sustainability associated with wild captured fish as well as later in order to SAC accreditation for plantation raced seafood. Wall-Mart recognized 5 main initiative for establishing of team to move around MASC. accreditation: Certification, Bunch Farming, Sea Reserves, Open public Awareness, Exterior col laboration. Wall-Mart objective was to improve the amount of fisheries as well as processing plants within the MASC. accreditation program.Supplies might refer the actual fisheries in order to MASC. and also have them make use of MASC. environmentally labels on the products, to be able to start buying Just as much certified fishes as you possibly can. The immediate cost associated with MASC. accreditation was taken care of by vessel operators as well as processing vegetation. Immediate advantages were seen with the certification MICROSOFT required the chain associated with custody to ensure that the actual fish had been virtually indistinguishable in the rest.Benefits via sustainability were observed in improved transport efficiencies, eradication of stock-outs as well as raw trials shortages, decrease in supplier expenses though standardized packaging, and so on. Wall-Mart delegated the actual implementation associated with MASC. towards the suppliers and also the supplier's inspir ed to building the connection were compelled to consider the methods there through gaining believe in of Wall- Mart. This creating relationships permitted Wall-Mart in order to talk with respect to suppliers, defend their own points and show other associates the significance of this particular relationships. In Digital network Wall-Mart recognized six key regions of Ochs: Materials innovation, E-waste, Laws, Green Architectural, Metrics, Instruction and Training. Their technique was to supply their clients with environmentally friendly product choices employing a supply string that improves the caliber of life of stakeholders. Wall-Mart needed to make assured orders towards the suppliers market only Ross-compliant items to clients. By 5 years they ensured that each and every computer they bought within US had been Ross compliant.Wall-Mart additionally introduced numerous initiative from reducing e-waste through starting Might programs such as recycling take-back applications. Wall-Ma rt also centered on advocating with regard to national requirements for each hazardous ingredients and e-waste. Organic 100 % cotton innovation task received main concern of the actual textiles system. They used clear requirements (USDA guidelines) with regard to organic 100 % cotton farming as well as manufacturing procedures. Got permit to utilize a certain dangerous chemicals had been safer substitutes weren't yet in a commercial sense available. The technique in 100 % cotton textiles would be to develop as well as environmentally garment made from renewable material match he procedure is effective with minimal wage and utilization of inputs having a minimum toxicity. Whenever three chemical substances were recognized. With an adverse ratings this encourage suppliers to make use of most environmentally friendly substitutes. Wall-Mart had been cautious within not discussing widely these types of metrics for any fear associated with boomerang upon other products by itself, but Just told customers it cared for his or her health. The overall game changer project would be to reduce the actual impact associated with environment as well as textile produce, which associated with recent source. It additionally played this safe through not placing its echo-friendly tags, not forced the maker to consider responsibility with regard to promoting atmosphere and many benefits for their own products as well as left if to allow them to decide To summarize Wall-Mart noticed and overwhelmingly large variety of opportunities which remain untrained and chose to continue to recognize and go after the possibilities with maximum environmental advantages and company value.Simultaneously as Wall-Mart is actually building worth added systems of federal government agencies, no – revenue organizations, circuiting and providers to â€Å"green† it's supply chains, the company is utilizing a network method of bring down overall the co and environment path to be able to add in order to profitability whilst increasing limitations. For many years Wall-Mart may be scarcely focusing on operations and provide chains, growth, and earnings. In regions of utmost environment impact and write out key networks which may help to accomplish these objectives. In come back for taking part in these value-added systems, participants will be given details about in addition to a say within Wall-Mart's procedures. Tyler Elm, Wall-Mart's older director associated with corporate technique, and Tim Ruben, Wall-Mart's vice leader of business strategy as well as business durability, directed Wall-Mart's system leaders in order to, â€Å"derive economic advantages of improved environment and interpersonal outcomes† (source: Elm, 2007). It's not really philanthropy,† he or she adds. Based on a Stanford Interpersonal Innovation Evaluation, â€Å"By the finish of the actual sustainability strategy very first year, the system teams experienced generated savings which were roughly add up to the earnings generated through several Wall-Mart Superstructures† (Source: Denned, 008).Below is a summary of Wall-Mart's environmentally friendly value systems and the way the company plans to complete each one of the main 3 goals: In the core from the business durability strategy used by Wall-Mart is really a drift through generating extra value via price-based relationships, relationships along with non – revenue organizations, providers, and additional stakeholders. With the above systems, Wall-Mart is actually absorbing something viewpoint that helps merchants find ways to cope with environmental problems. In trade for these types of suppliers addressing the problems, the scale from the operations from Wall-Mart allows nonprofit system members obtain huge Jumps towards their own overall quests. Suppliers also provide the advantage of not Just the solidity that much more intimate associations with Wall-Mart get, but additionally the assistance and assistance from Wall-Mart's charitable partners. The Wall-Mart durability strategy without doubt looks to become off to some promising begin; they mustn't grow to be complacent as well as must press-on along with awareness to make these systems sustainable and in a position to spread away without interlude. The very first thing they have to do is actually administer these types of partnerships vigilantly so that costs lower. They additionally need every single child manage the actual sense associated with balance in between presenting â€Å"green† as well as conventional â€Å"non-green† items in its chains. Lastly, because of the extremely high quantity of nonprofits within the network, Wall-Mart is needed to supervise losing these close ties. Individual groups might not be able to find out credit for any large decrease on environment impact. With time, these groups' failure every single child make apparent their impact could cause some tribulations using their fundrais ing simply because donors will insist upon increasingly more data talking about their overall performance. These difficulties could eventually source the actual nonprofit organizations to pull out of the networks VI. Question 3 Although Wall-Mart the Far East international shops sourced from the well- established system of provider developed as well as managed through the Global Procurement department, its household procurement had been handled through Superstructure retailing.Chinese regulation required companies to become licensed tit regard to either transfer or foreign trade or with regard to domestic manufacturing. However it's not possible in order to license with regard to both. Consequently, many international companies setup holding businesses with both scale back on product packaging, and the organization has set an objective of ultimately producing right now waste and only using renewable power sources. Nevertheless, now much of the actual low-hanging fruit may be taken, achieving bigger sustainability goals will probably take much more work.Wall-Mart tend to be bringing the knowledge and understanding gained within U. Tutees. To tell the Chinese language. Wall-Mart will work closely along with non-governmental organizations to assist plant inspectors within China understand the business's sustainability endeavors. Wall-Mart focal points in China is going to be appropriate waste materials disposal, general waste decrease and decreasing greenhouse gasoline emissions, in addition to reducing product packaging and improving energy efficiency instead of doing company along.Within the recent occasions, Wall-Mart has submit some steps to upgrade about the environment as well as enhance power efficiency. A few of the initial actions include investing large amounts of money to enhance the effectiveness n its trucks fleet with a quarter as well as by dual in following years. It intends to lessen greenhouse gasoline emissions, reduce energy make use of two su bstantial levels. The company's managerial group comprehends on utilization of non- renewable power sources in order to zero price waste.A number of this type of energy entails harnessing associated with natural sources such as the sun and also the wind. When in addition and adds are thought, Wall-Mart has much more good towards the economy people and it's people in particular. Next the organization created 14 environmentally friendly value networks having a deader identified who does be generating the durability in some other part of the company. As the actual sustainability effort acquired momentum it had been quick to understand that the actual sustainability doesn't include extra function but is Just a new method of approaching one's personal work.Hence this started determining new responsibility for individuals in their own existing position instead of creating brand new Jobs and managed to get a fundamental element of the work everybody performed. Other significant change from the implementation was to appear outside hat was a main shift in the usual method Wall-Mart accustomed to conduct its operations concentrated internally. The technique represented a significant cultural change for that organization, looking for ideas through all – experts, No's providers, echo-friendly rivals, academicians as well as its critics. It's also engaged inside a dialogue using the government concerning climate change along with a curb upon greenhouse gasoline emissions. The collaborative strategy was performing wonders also it decided to create it part of the continuing sustainability design. All over the 14 Roth networks, countless external organizations where asked to become listed on and participate with an ongoing basis and also the primary qualifying criterion was to incorporate and engage people that are genuinely devoted to desired long term outcomes.Wall-Mart started participating in dialog along with government plan makers concerning climate alter. It comp ared a co tax as it will likely be passed onto customers and for that reason advocated the cap as well as trade program and recommended proposals with regard to market dependent programs with regard to reducing echo-friendly gas emissions. The systems were encourage to build up a

African American Civil Rights Movement

The African-American civil rights movement is about a century old and it started from the grassroots level for the end of racial injustice and social discrimination towards African Americans. The struggle was a combined effort of the many black African American leaders, ministers and communities comprising the authorities of black churches, editors and publishers of black owned newspapers, racial and interracial organizations. The struggle was for getting the basic civil and human rights which the society was denying to them. There were many organized legal challenges in the court of law and also many acts of courage against cruel police actions against the movement. (History Topic, African American civil rights movement) A particular example of this type of struggle has been displayed in the book Warriors Dont Cry written by Melba Pattillo Beals. The author has narrated a horrible example which clearly shows the extent of racial feeling and hatred that was prevalent in the US society during 1950 after the Second World War. â€Å"As she walks through the halls and rooms of the old school, she recalls the horrible acts of violence that were committed by the white students against her and her friends.†(Warrior’s Don’t cry, Free Essays). In spite of the Supreme Court order in 1954 that all schools must provide equal education to all students and it would be unconstitutional for some schools to deny this opportunity to some, the worst incident happened at Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. The school authorities took three years to complete the integration plan. The entire white community in the town started protesting the integration plan and acts of violence towards the African American community spread in the town. Seeing the public  outrage many black students decided to stay back in the black only school in the city that was under funded. (Warrior’s Don’t cry, Free Essays) The local Arkansas authorities passed laws and ordinances that would prevent the integration plan of the school. The Governor of Arkansas sent National Security Guards to surround the school building and prevent the black students entering the school premises. Nine black students, which includes the author Ms Beals defied the order and started walking towards the school. But they could not reach the school as â€Å"before they even reached the property they were met with great resistance from racist citizens who spat upon them, mocked them, threw sharp objects at them, and even physically beat them. Melba describes the deep hurt she felt as for the first time in her life she saw the harsh reality of racism at its worst.† (Warrior’s Don’t cry, Free Essays) The incident took the nation by storm as the African American civil rights movement was then at its peak form. Amazed by their courage against oppression, these young students popularly came to be known as Little Rock Nine and they were appreciated for the stand they had taken against the oppression that their people were facing for the past few centuries in America. The blacks were forced to use separate restrooms, drinking water, restaurants, sidewalk and every other means of public utility service. Though during this time, people started to believe that it is possible to co-exist peacefully with the blacks and that was good for the society at large, the South was not ready to accept the departure from their century old beliefs. (Warrior’s Don’t cry, Free Essays) The incidents of racism during the 1950’s in America’s south have also been described in the book ‘Separate Pasts: Growing Up White in the Segregated South’  written by Melton Alonza McLaurin. It is an honest admittance of the fact from a white Southerner that how severe was racism at that time. The author has described an incident of his in the book where he has punched a black boy named Bobo, because he used the same needle that he does to blow up the basketball. He has also referred an African American school teacher who forces him to call her â€Å"Miss†. (Amazon.com book review) This is an example which shows how African American school teachers were looked down upon by their white students during 1950’s.   These scattered incidents were enough to ignite the fire for the Civil rights movement. African American soldiers after returning home risking their lives from the Second World War, found that they were largely deprived and ignored at home. Thus â€Å"The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the Urban League  Ã¢â‚¬â€ including their Minnesota chapters — joined other organizations in using legal, political, judicial, economic, and legislative means to gain full citizenship rights for their people.† (History Topic, African American civil rights movement) Then the famous Reverend Martin Luther King, along with his colleagues under the banner of Southern Christian Leadership Congress (SCLC), started a nonviolent and civil disobedience movement that took the movement to a new height amidst mass protests. It started with the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955 and spread through sit-ins and large peaceful demonstrations, as local groups and their leaders joined the struggle. (History Topic, African American civil rights movement) The prominent                 leaders of the movement were W.E.B. Du Bois, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, etc. (African-American Civil rights Movement)

Techniques of 21st century political speech writing Essay

Techniques of 21st century political speech writing - Essay Example The following tools of successful political speech writing reveal a curtain of mystery from this rhetoric master skill. Imagery means, such as metaphor and simile: â€Å"Like being savaged by a dead sheep†. This simile appeals to the audience and makes an emphasis on required issues clearly. It goes without saying and it’s no wonder that usage of imagery in political speeches bears fruits: in one way or another, subconsciously or not, the recipient audience looks in their memories for a certain image thus information encoded is engraved in their minds. Another technique, such as repetition, is considered to be relevant in political speech writing too. More often it is claimed that anaphora, which is repetition of the first words of each line, is generally used. It is also possible to use repetition inside the sentence, for example: â€Å"There are some of us... who will fight, fight, and fight again to save the party we love.† or â€Å"Ask me my three priorities : education, education, education†. In such a way repetition engraves the most crucial aspects of political speech. Nevertheless it is necessary to underline that usage of repetition throughout the speech can be boring and ineffective.

Sport Management - Grix, J. and Carmichael, F. (2012), Why do Essay

Sport Management - Grix, J. and Carmichael, F. (2012), Why do governments invest in elite sport A Polemic - Essay Example To do this, Grix & Carmichael (2012) analyse previous literature on the topic to ascertain whether the reasons that are commonly provided for such large investments in elite sport are justified and have been scientifically proven to their standards. In turn, this essay will provide a thorough analysis of the article by using a summary and a strictly defined set of criteria that will show the contribution to knowledge that the article gives and the way that this can be incorporated into further research. Grix and Carmichael (2012) have identified that elite sport has often had a huge amount of investment in many developed democracies, and this investment has not often been questioned or examined. The article suggests that the very reasons for high investment in elite sport, such as increasing participation in non-elite sport, are not often backed by substantial research and therefore the need for such levels of investment needs to be examined. Grix and Carmichael (2012) identify that the reasoning behind funding elite sport is based upon the ‘virtuous cycle of sport’, a term they use to refer to the thought that high levels of achievement in elite sport leads to a feel-good factor for the nation and higher levels of participation. They also argue that it is linked to the double pyramid theory, in that more people participating in sport in general will lead to the generation of more Olympic champions, which will in turn booster morale for the country and so on. The rationale for investing in sport to promote participation seems like a strong argument, particularly as levels of activity are at an all-time low and obesity levels are rising (Carmichael et al, 2012), which in turn gives a higher amount of pressure on the National Health Service. Additionally, Grix and Carmichael (2012) identify the increase of community cohesion for those who participate in sport, but the argument here is that increasing funding

Healthy Diets Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Healthy Diets - Essay Example The human body is a complex, living, biological organism that is sustained by nutrients for its continued survival. Without these nutrients, the body breaks down from weakness and disease and eventually dies. Like any living organism, the human body has to be cared for by providing it with the means to maintain the energy it needs to keep its biological functions working. Everything that the human body can do - seeing, touching, hearing, smelling, thinking, moving, reproducing, and so on - would depend on how well its smallest unit called the cell is nourished and maintained. Since the human body consists of some 60 trillion cells (Dunne, 2002, p. 135) that are grouped together into organs, each with its own function and purpose, the whole body will be healthy and able to live for a long period of time if the cells in the body are kept in good working condition. This is what nutrition is supposed to do, to keep each cell healthy and functioning properly. Nutrition provides the body with nutrients that are chemical substances necessary to keep the cell, and therefore the body, alive. There are six types of nutrients: carbohydrates, fats (or lipids), proteins, vitamins, minerals, and water. Each nutrient participates in at least one of the following functions: providing energy to the body, building and repairing body tissue, and regulating bodily proce sses. Carbohydrates, proteins, and fats supply energy. Proteins also build and repair body tissues with the help of vitamins and minerals. Vitamins, minerals, and water help regulate the different body processes such as circulation, respiration, digestion, and elimination of waste. Each nutrient is important and none works alone. Nutrients come from the food we eat, which the body must process before they can be used. What is known as nutrition is the whole series of processes where the body takes in and uses food for growth, development, and maintaining good bodily health. These processes - digestion, absorption, and metabolism - are very important and also need nutrients in order to be carried out properly. Nutrition therefore includes the whole range of activities that starts with the food we eat (our diet), the nutrients contained in the food, and the process of digestion, absorption, and metabolism that break down the nutrients in our diet into chemicals that are sent to all the different cells in the human body. If we want the body to stay healthy, the whole nutrition process must be healthy. This begins with having a healthy diet or food intake. What is a healthy diet This is what doctors, scientists, and health experts have been doing research all these years to determine. Several research studies show that what for us would be a healthy diet depends on many factors, such as our bodily state, age, level of activity, our lifestyles, the antibodies we have developed in our immune systems, and even the way we were nourished when we were still in our mother's womb and our cultural background (different people prefer potatoes, pasta, bread, rice, or noodles with their meat). There are countless definitions of what a healthy diet is. What may be healthy for bush men in the forests of Africa and Papua New Guinea (fresh worms, raw tuber roots, and boiled fish) may not be healthy for a young student living in Europe, and vice

In Vivo And In Vitro Experimental Research Essay

In Vivo And In Vitro Experimental Research - Essay Example Despite this, in vitro studies can be very difficult to extrapolate from the results to the intact organism. Caution must be exercised not to over-interpret the results in the case of in vitro experiments. For example, an investigation of a bacterial can be positive in a controlled environment but be ineffective in a natural environment.  Despite this, in vitro studies can be very difficult to extrapolate from the results to the intact organism. Caution must be exercised not to over-interpret the results in the case of in vitro experiments. For example, an investigation of a bacterial can be positive in a controlled environment but be ineffective in a natural environment.  Ã‚  On the other hand, in vivo experiments gives a better picture of what is going on inside the organism cell.    All cells contain some machinery can be important in the experiments.   It also can be a disadvantage side since it becomes practically hard to control all the parameters of a cell. Additionall y, living things tend to show variability, even with time, which is somehow hard to fully control. On the aspect of control, in vitro experiments is better as compared to in vivo especially when studying soluble molecules. It can be possible to add small amounts of molecules and maybe assess their binding knowing that no other molecules are interfering. However, this can be disadvantageous since some enzymes may require special conditions to work better which might be a bit hard to create in a test-tube.

High School Essay Example for Free

High School Essay My freshman year of high school was scary. Two rival middles schools coming together to make one freshman class did not seem like the best idea, the classes were harder, and the stress levels were higher. In eighth grade I was so excited to be in high school, but once I got there I could not wait for that year to be over. Then I realized I still had three more long school years ahead of me. Dont get me wrong, I had plenty of fun times freshman year. I met so many new people and made a lot of new friends. The majority of my friends then are still my friends now. But I was ready to grow up. I think every teenager thinks like this at one point or throughout every year of high school. Most teenagers are ready to move from home and start a new and more independent life in college during most years of high school. I know that I thought this way for quite sometime. I thought that life in college would be a million times more eventful than life in high school. Sophomore and junior year were also similar to freshman year. Friendships became stronger, classes were continuing to get more difficult, and even though I involved myself more in extracurricular activities, I was ready to get out of town and start college more than ever. I had picked out my dream school and already had so many plans for my freshman year of college. But instead of time speeding up like I wished it would, it felt like it was slowing down. Summer going into senior year I began getting bored with the town and I felt like I was always saying there is nothing to do here. I thought I needed more adventure and was becoming tired of just going through the motions. Although I felt like that then, a few weeks into senior year my mindset had completely changed. Even though senior year has been the toughest year yet, my class has created a culture. There is so many things that define us as a class and set us apart from everyone else. From traditions started at football games, to the things that we do as a group, we have created our own culture and identity. I have realized that even though I have wanted the past three years to fly by, all I want is for this year to slow down. My friends and I have all created extremely close bonds and we have become almost like a family. I feel like throughout the past three years I have taken a lot of things for granted and have not really appreciated all the memories I have had that came from good experiences. I have learned not to take any special moments for granted because I could look back on these days and remember all of the good times and how much I enjoyed my senior year. At times I regret wanting to grow up so fast because I know now that these are some of the best times of my life and I wish I would have appreciated them before. Although I do regret that, Im thankful I get to spend this year with every single one of my closest friends. I still have a long time to make memories, but as the saying goes, time flies when youre having fun.

The term Civilization Essay Example for Free

The term Civilization Essay Civilizations are complex societies with cities, government, art, architecture, religion, class divisions and writing systems. To uphold an effective civilization, cultural diffusion, farming and writing with a spoken language are essential. Cultural diffusion is a key element to maintaining a complex civilization. When people from different civilizations came into contact with one another, they learned from one another. They would learn how other people from different societies did things and all their different and new inventions. They would bring this new understanding back to their cities and villages, which usually brought them back security and prosperity for the future. The transition from hunting and gathering to farming was a huge factor in a well-held civilization. This change was known as the Neolithic Age. Farming at this time gave people an appointed community and an abundance of food. Farmers were able to gather into a heap more occupations than their hunter and gatherer ancestors. This is because they stayed in one place and didn’t have to go and search for a food source. Farmers had to develop new tools to farm effectively. They had to keep track of their crops and also protect them. Mesopotamians commerced and operated in large cities and towns. They depended on irrigation farming and trade was a big way with archaeology. The rule for the Mesopotamians was patriarchy. Women usually ruled over men in this ancient society. Hebrews played a small role in trade between the Nile and the Mediterranean. Their economy was pastoral. Ancient civilizations helped discover a lot of what the world is today. Cultural diffusion, the transition from hunting and gathering to farming and ancient society made a huge impact from ancient civilizations to today’s society.

They had shown that the gender which use Facebook most in Vietnam is male (54%), more than a half. Problem The circumstances that lead to Facebook: Beacause of the popularity of Facebook, everyone in Vietnam use Facebook a lot, and that causes some negative issues for anyone who use Facebook too much. The other reasons why Vietnamese people use Facebook a a lot is that they want to communicate to each other easier. Facebook is more convinient then the mobile phone because Facebook doesn’t cost any money to communicate, which mean people is now keep in touch with each other very easy. The problem of Facebook in Vietnam: Facebook addiction: The first problem everyone will think is the Facebook addiction. Many people in Vietnam have the Facebook addiction. Vietnamese people use Facebook very much, in accordance with the statistics, Vietnamese young people use Facebook approximately 60 minutes per day. Some people use it every minute. However, the most people in Vietnam can’t take their eyes out of the computer screen when they use Facebook. Infer from GlobalWebIndex, the ratings of Vietnam is 10, out of 32countries have a Facebook addiction. The picture below show the coutries that have the most Facebook users. There are many reasons to explain the Facebook addiction, in that case, Dr. Brent Conrad, Clinical Psycologist for TechAddiction, have provided some reason for this problem. There are 21 reasons for that situation but here are 3 most popular reason why people in Vietnam like to use Facebook and use Facebook very much: -The first reason he gave is that Facebook allow people to catch-up very easy. Everyone can easily create an account and add some friend, they just the instucture, which doesn’t cost to much time to do, and then they will have an account. Moreover, the users don’t need to activate Facebook account so that they can easily have an acount. -Related to the first point, the secon reason he pointed out is the easily information sharing. According to that reason, Facebook allows people to share their information, include their personal information. Because of that, people can get the information of the others very fast. -The last reason is they want to tell the world that they are not alone. Today, many people in Vietnam have a lot of work to do, so that they don’t have time to have the social communicate, they can easily feel alone. With that situation, they go to Facebook to have more communication with other people to feel better and to say that they are not alone. (http://www.techaddiction.ca/why-is-facebook-addictive.html.) Virtual life: The another problem is the virtual life of many people in Vietnam today. They spend a lot of time to log in to Facebook sometimes for no reason. They use it at school, at home, even when they hang out with their friend. Facebook users who have a virtual life usually don’t want to go out and play with their friends. Even when they hang out with their friend, they also log on Facebook and don’t listen to the conversation. The people who have the virtual life on Facebook have a lot of expression. -The first thing they have is that they can’t get rid of Facebook. For more detail, they always say the word â€Å"Facebook† eveytime, everywhere, and they always think to Facebook whatever they do, even when they go out and play with their friends. For example, when they go out and eat something with their friends, or go to the movie theatre, they always take some pictures about the meals or the movie tickets to post on Facebook, they think that when they take these pictures, the meals or the movie could be more interesting. -The another expression is that they really proud of themselves when they have a lot of friends or followers on Facebook, they think that when someone have a lot of friends or followers on Facebook that mean that one can be very popular, even when they don’t have any reputation. -The last thing is that they very admire the â€Å"like† or â€Å"comment† on their Facebook. They love them too much that they don’t want to eat or do something good for their health. They say that they do not have to eat because when the â€Å"like† or â€Å"comment† increase, they feel vey full and healthy. Wasting too much time: The next problem usually happen to students. Facebook take too much of their time. They spend to much time on Facebook and then they lose their time for studying or playing with their family. The sequel is the decline in studying, or working. Therefore, some students have a bad results in study, and more terrible is that they can be repetition. Information leaked: The last problem is the most common problem on Facebook right now. It is the leak of information, especially personal information. The users can easily be stolen their information, the stealers can get the users information by a lot of way. However, the two most popular way is hacking or using viruses. -The first way is hacking. Sometimes, Facebook users are hacked by the hackers to get their information, and then the hackers can use the account they just hacked to trick the hacked users’s friends. The second purpose is that, the hackers can take the users’s information to extort the account owners. -The other way is using viruses, they use viruses and attack their target. With the viruses, the theft can easily get the information and then do the same way with the hackers. The picture below show the virus is being used nowaday http://www.thanhnien.com.vn/cong-nghe-thong-tin/xuat-hien-virus-lua-dao-tren-facebook-messenger-447076.html. To conclusion, hacking or using viruses can get the Facebook users’s information for many reason, for fun or for some bad aim. The users have to be careful with the weird link that appear in their Facebook. Solution: In Vietnam, the government had promulgated a lot of solution to reduce the use of Facebook, or to protect the Facebook users out of the problem that had been mentioned in previous part (especially information leaked) Reduce the use of Facebook: A lot of solutions had been propounded to reduce the use of Facebook. Here are some solutions that help to reduce it. -Vietnam used to forbade Facebook to prevent the increase the users and prevent the information leaked. Now, although the government allowed to use Facebook, however, they still raise the awareness to reduce the number of Facebook users. -Some family in Vietnam allow their children to access Facebook in a certain time, also call it the curfew time. By this way, the children can control their time on Facebook wisely. -Many schools or organisations in Vietnam open the communication classes or soft skill classes, like in OISP or the University of Natural Science. With these classes, people can get more confident and communication skill and prepare for a good real life communication. Protect the users from information leaked: Vietnam had enacted some solutions to protect, included some court of law to prevent users from being hacked or stolen information. Such as: -The government have some instruction about setting privacy on Facebook to prevent the hackers (http://vietlq.com/chong-hack-tai-khoan-facebook-nhung-cai-dat-bao-mat-ban-can-biet/.) -To help the users prevent the viruses, Vietnam government have some program to find and destroy the viruses, such as the BKAV (Bach Khoa Anti Virus) or the Avast. -Another way is that, the government also have a policy and law to ban the thefts and also raise the awareness to their people. Evaluation: Although these solutions seem very good, but teaching communication skills is the most effective solution of them all. However, that solution still have some advantages and disadvantages effect to Vietnamese people: Advantages: The previous part had mentioned some good effect of having communication class, it will help the users have more confident and communication skill to have a good conversation in the real life. The second benefit of communication is that the users will have a true feelings about everything. For example, a man always uses Facebook will never have a real emotions, because Facebook can’t transmit the true feelings of human, although Facebook have the emotion icon on messenger, however, that is not enough to let people know the feelling of each other. With the true feelings, human can build up a good relationship with each other. The last benefit of the communication skills is creating a strong attraction for people. If someone have good communication skills, that one will have more attraction to the other people. Disadvantages: Although teaching communication skill is the best solution, it still have some disadvantages. Because the communication class is very new with Vietnamese people, some people don’t want to learn it. To have good communication skills, the learner have to spend a lot of time learning it, so it cost to much time to learn. Conclusion: To sum up, although Facebook have a lot of benefits, it also cause some bad effect to Vietnamese people. In that case, the government should have some good policy to reduce the use of Facebook, and protect the Facebook users from the problem of Facebook (especially the information leaked). Furthermore, Vietnamese people should learn to communicate with other people to reduce the bad effect of Facebook. References: â€Å"Company Info | Facebook Newsroom†. Facebook. The Power of Sixteen Words Exposed in The Red Wheelbarrow Essay

The Power of Sixteen Words Exposed in The Red Wheelbarrow William Carlos Williams's poem "The Red Wheelbarrow" is extraordinary for what it accomplishes within its eight short lines. It is exactly one sentence long, sixteen words. Numbers like that wouldn't normally be important in the consideration of a poem's merit, but "The Red Wheelbarrow" begs to be noticed for its length (or, rather, its lack of length) and for the arrangement of its sixteen words on the page. In fact, an interesting experiment would be to give a group of people the words that Williams uses and ask them to arrange the words into the structure of a poem. How many people would do as Williams does and end up with four almost perfectly congruent stanzas, each one with three words in the first line and one word in the second line? The syllable count in Williams's arrangement is not perfectly congruent, but it is harmoniously different: the two longer stanzas (by only one syllable apiece) sandwich the two shorter stanzas. A sentence which would otherwise sprawl across the page, nearly without structure (it has no punctuation or end-mark), so much depends upon a red wheel barrow glazed with rain water beside the white chickens. is poured into a form of mathematical precision: Instead of flying through the sentence, as one would do if it were simply written in a linear way across the page, the reader tends to stop at each line-break and at every stanza break to contemplate how each stanza is different. And there is a difference. The first stanza is abstract, calling upon the reader to agree to the notion that something depends on... ...ores (involving the red wheelbarrow, perhaps)? In the back room, looking out the window? In any case, the scene we look at is framed and self-contained by the structure of the poem, and all the sensory information of the objects we look at comes through that frame, opens up through that frame. Perhaps the real "dependency" in this poem is not that the speaker of the poem depends on the wheelbarrow as a farmer depends on his tools, although that is certainly part of it. Perhaps the real "so much depends / upon" is that the speaker, the beholder through the frame (and, by extension, the reader of the poem) knows that he or she is alive, that his or her senses are responding to the things of this world, and that, in a sense, the world -- in all its variety and beauty and variegation, even in the most mundane things -- responds to the person who has eyes to see.

Facts about Earths Moon Essay -- essays research papers

The moon is a wondrous thing. Every night it's outside, up high in the sky, giving light to the world. Most people take advantage of the moon's light, because they don't know why or how the moon shines. Scientists today are busy proving theories and studying the moon, which will hopefully help society to understand the moon more. They know a lot about the moon, but there is still much more to learn. ?The Eagle has landed.? Many people use this phrase without knowing where it came from. On July 20, 1969, NASA astonished the world, when Neil Armstrong spoke these words when the Apollo spacecraft, nicknamed ?the Eagle,? landed on the moon?s surface. He later spoke the famous words, ?One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind,? when he was the first man to set foot on the moon. When astronauts walk on the moon, they are allowed to breathe, because of their space suits. These space suits have oxygen tanks in them, and allow astronauts to stay out in space for up to seven hours at a time. They have to think ahead a few steps so they can step or turn without difficulty, because they have to take huge steps. The pull of gravity on the moon is one-sixth lower than the pull of gravity on the Earth, which makes them a lot lighter on the moon. The moon?s gravitational pull controls the ocean?s tides on the Earth. The moon pulls the Earth and water towards it, which causes an increase of water nearest the moon. As the moon pulls the core of the Earth towards it, the water on the side farthest away from the moon flings around to the side, and creates an increase of water there, too. The increase of water is called a high tide. On the sides of the Earth not facing the sun or moon, there are low tides. Each beach or po... ...lieve that millions of years ago, a piece of rock as big as Mars hit the Earth, and the collision blasted a huge amount of rock into space, and the shattered pieces of rock went into orbit around the Earth. Over millions of years, the rocks clumped together to form the moon, and now it is not the pieces of rock that orbit the Earth, but the moon itself. Scientists, Native Americans, and many other people have their theories of how the moon became, but none have been proven. Scientists have studied the moon for many years, and have proven many theories, but not this one. Most people still take advantage of the moon, even after society has learned so much about it. They won?t think of it until the day the moon isn?t there anymore, which won?t happen anytime soon. Scientists have helped us greatly in understanding the moon, but there is still much more to learn.

Fairies in Folklore and Literature Essay -- Exploratory Essays Researc

Fairies in Folklore and Literature Fairies have been part of literature, art, and culture for more than fifteen hundred years. With them have come many stories about their interaction with adults and children. These stories have been compiled by men such as Charles Perrault and the Brothers Grimm, who provided the world with a large compilation of fairy tales, which are still told today. Perrault and the Grimms together compiled over six hundred legends that originated from all around Europe. These myths and legends often included imaginary being called fairies, sprites, and nymphs. Fairies are frequently described as tiny human beings. Their clothing, which is usually green, gold, or blue, is thought to have been created from natural elements such as leaves and vines which have been sown together to make their dresses and loin cloths. Many of these magical beings had wings and could change forms and disappear when they had to. There were both male and female fairies, some good and others evil. Evil female fairies were usually associated with female sexuality and abused their magical powers by doing harm (Rose 107-9). They also had two, distinct living groups. One was called the "trooping group," a group of fairies that lived together in a community with governmental authority and laws, usually a monarchy. Most of these "trooping groups" were found in Irish and occasionally in English folklore. The other fairies are simply known as "solitary fairies," the ones that do not live within the community and are associated with outside families, places, or activities. This group would include fairy godmothers (Rose 107). All fairies were said to live in the ground, within a forest. If humans wanted to find the fairie... ... Jane Eyre can been seen in the compilation of Charles Perrault’s work, especially in "Tom Thumb" and "Bluebeard" and "The Fairies." It could also be argued that Charlotte might not have read or heard these stories but was introduced to many of the same themes through gothic novels of the time. Antigone Essay

The story of Antigone is a tragic story that means that the universal themes are going to make the audience thinks twice about their decisions or life itself. This story has a lot of universal themes like facing darkness, role of women and the most important theme in my opinion would be injustice. This universal can be applied to today’s world. Facing darkness! After the two brother named Eteocles and Polyneices fight for opposites sides Creon decides to buried of the brother that fight for his kingdom ,in this case would be Eteocles and he decides not to buried the other brother because he was fighting against his kingdom. Creon said that â€Å"Polyneices is a traitor and should not be buried and he should be giving to the slavery â€Å" (Sophocles 1109). Creon also said â€Å"Anyone trying to bury Polyneices should pay with death† (Sophocles 1109). This is the point when darkness began for Antigone figuring out how she is going to buried her brother that she love an d if she is caught she was willing to pay with her life because that prove how much she loved her brother. After Antigone death happen the darkness began for Creon because he killed his father and his song and now looking for forgiveness something that he didn’t deserve. To finalize with this theme darkness change this kingdom. Women can make a huge impact. The story of Antigone reflects this by Antigone fighting on what she believes something that no man was willing to do. She decides to go against his uncle, the king Creon. Antigone tells her sister Ismene that â€Å"she will bury Polyneices and that Creon has no right to keep me from my own† (Sophocles 1105). Irmene tell Antigone â€Å"Remember we are women, we’re not born to contend with men† (Sophocles 1105). Antigone tells her sister â€Å"I will raise a mound for him, for my dear brother† (Sophocles 1106). Back then women was afraid of men because they didn’t know how to stand up in what believes for. A perfect example of this would Irmene; she tells Antigone that she didn’t have the courage to join her. In the end Antigone died happy knowing she did the right thing and from that point women began following her examples. How the theme of injustice is reflected in the story? To start with, injustice  happen from the beginning the story w hen Creon announcing that Polyneices is not going to be buried until the part of Creon killing his own family. Antigone was a person who believes that family members should be treated with respect and she was willing to the right thing no matter what happened to her. For example she believes everybody should be buried no matter what they did. In the other hand Creon was person that wanted to follow tradition from the city and God according to him and he was willing to do anything that he thinks should be helpful even punishing his own family. Creon killed his family because they were in favor of Antigone and that is not reason enough because they just were expressing their opinion. To sum up, these universal themes are reflected in the play Antigone. Out of those themes injustice have to the most impact in this story because that what this story main focus for the readers. The story can be applied to today’s world by everything having a consequence. For example Creon regrets killing his father and his son and wants forgiveness from God. If woman like Antigone didn’t have the courage to do what she did, women today would be still fear men and the government like Irmene. Music Genre Essay

We take sounds and create the music we hear every day. Our development on music is effected by people around us. We take the context of songs and relate it back to our own lives. People dislike certain types of music because they can’t relate or enjoy the sound. Although music affects us all differently, all melodies have a similar meaning. Everyone’s choice of music is greatly affected by influences. The genre we get into is all caused for the same reasons; family, friends, or social environments. A child who has grown up in the country might be exposed to mostly country music, while a child in the city might be used to rock or new pop music on the radio. We all come to enjoy the music our parents played in our early life but as we grow up we add our own genre of music. The genre of music you choose mostly places you in a similar group of friends. For example someone who listens to mostly all country probably won’t fit in as well with the kids who listen to metal. The friends who listen to metal judge that person who listens to country. The influences will change a person to fit in with the crowd or cause someone to create their own group. The pressure puts labels on all people for the genres they listen to. If you listen to scremo, you might be considered gothic or country might be labeled as hicks. What people don’t realize is every song is composed of beats, and the instruments is what changes the sound of a song. Where we live and the people surrounding us, affects our influence on music. Every sound we hear creates different moods and emotions. People can all relate music to a personal experience, but that experience is very diverse for each person. When we hear a song about love some can be excited and relate that song to their own relationship or someone can be upset and think about their past love. Music almost makes you feel like you can travel back in time. We all have a moment when we listen to a song, and that melody creates a mental image of where you were when you first listened to it. You can see that moment and feel the emotions you felt in the past. Music creates memory, and each memory creates emotion in our life. We enjoy listening to music because it gives us a good vibe. That feel good moment is the reason why we appreciate music. Many listeners also enjoy a song because of the simple lyrics to follow. Everyone uses music for some type of therapy. We listen to songs so we can vent, relax, dance, or reminis. One song can have a great affect on each individual differently. We loathe on music just because it’s something we don’t like. Everyone has a different music preference, and we all like music for the same reason. We all enjoy the way music makes us feel. Music is all around us and is a part of our life, but why do people continue to despise certain genres? Most people look at the basic parts of a song, only the lyrics; they don’t appreciate the sound behind the words. Without that sound we wouldn’t have a song to enjoy. All Sound is music, whether it’s listening to a clock tick or a fan spinning on the ceiling, we can create our own tunes. The song Too Close by Alec Clare is a perfect example of how listeners can have such disgust with one genre but will accept a song. The song has a catchy raw beat that people love without even realizing the genres in the song. The song Too Close was a very popular song for all ages or genres because Alex Clare mixed alternative rock, electronic, and soul music. So many people who like rock can’t stand electronic music because it’s repetitive, has less lyrics, and it’s not â€Å"real† music. Yet rock and electronic is similar in many ways. They both have a repetitive chorus and verse and made up of different sounds. Rock can have long solos along with electronic. So when Alex Clare created the song Too Close many people never realized he combined different genre types. Many people disagree with certain music because they dont recognize the connection all music has. Each genre has a comparable meaning, but holds a different impact on people. Our social environment molds us into the music we listen to. Music also allows us to feel every emotion. We can all listen to the same song but have a totally different outlook on the concept behind the song. Our different personalities cause individuals to dislike any type of song they cannot connect to.

Police Corruption Problems

Corruption has been in the dark closets of American policing since it was first established in the country. When policing was first instituted conditions were not the best, pay was low, and respect was hard to find. These problems coupled with the problem of a lack of laws in which bound the police to accomplish a specific task a specific way, meant they had enough discretion to hang themselves by. There shouldn†t be any surprise that corruption hasn†t vanished and will most likely never totally go away. It is just like the saying â€Å"Absolute power, corrupts absolutely†. It is just human nature to want a better life and get the things you always wanted. Some people, and police are just people, just can†t resist the temptation for â€Å"easy money†. People have a way of rationalizing situations in their heads, by thinking they are just taking care of their families and paying there bills. This is similar to the job I presently have, working in the Asset protection department for Sears. I see things I would like to have all day long, I know I could take them and no one would ever know, but I don†t. I don†t do it because there is a fear of getting caught or any kind of punishment like that, I don†t do it because of ethics and morals. I, like the majority of people see the opportunity, while a very small percentage of people take advantage of it. It is the same with policing most police are honest and hard working but, there are always some â€Å"bad apples† in the bunch. If you knew a way to tell if someone was going to be honest in everything they do, 100% of the time, I think you would at the very least be a billionaire. Corruption has to be defined in order to look at it closer. The dictionary definition of corruption is: 1. Marked by immorality and perversion; depraved. 2. Venal; dishonest: a corrupt mayor. 3 Containing errors or alterations, as a text: a corrupt translation. 4. Archaic. Tainted; putrid. Would consider a police officer who accepted a free cup of coffee corrupt?. What about an officer accepting money in exchange for not patrolling his/her sector. What would you think of a business person taking that same cup of coffee, would you believe him/her to be corrupt? I think you have to draw a line on what is corrupt and what you believe isn†t. I think you have to add into your decision making steps the â€Å"offenders† jobs, position, and role in the community. The conclusion I came to is that it definitely does make a difference on the job, position, and role in the community. I believe if the business person had nothing to do with the place in which he/she received the coffee, he/she is not corrupt. He/she just had an act of kindness betrothed on them. Regarding the police officer, he/she should not of accepted the coffee because he/she has a duty to stay impartial to the community. If he/she had to go to a fight later that same day between the person that gave him the coffee and another person, and the person who gave him the coffee was found to be in the right and the other person was in the wrong, what would happen? Most likely the person who was arrested (assuming this person had knowledge that he accepted the coffee) would most likely bring that fact up at the trial. If this situation happened the officer†s integrity would be in question, and the jury/judge would have to wonder about it. Of course accepting coffee is not the main focus of police corruption, its not against the law, nor will it have a overwhelming impact on policing. I do believe the illustration puts into simplistic terms the larger problems which are occurring with policing in large. It all comes down to â€Å"Do I take it or don†t I take it? † and it is enough? Corruption is like a drug in a way, you start small and just work your way up the ladder, until you fall off. I said before that accepting a cup of coffee isn†t against the law and doesn†t make up the corruption which we face today. I am going to describe some recent corruption cases which have been fought. As identified in a report by the Knapp Commission published over two decades ago it was found there are two different violators. The first are called â€Å"Meat eaters† who abundantly misuse their power for personal gain. These individuals go out and seek ways to get money and have the advantage. The second type is called the â€Å"Grass eaters† these people are the ones who just accept payoffs and such when the happenstance come their way. For the most part, when you hear of a corruption case you most likely hear about the â€Å"Meat eaters†, because they are the ones which get bolder faster with every successful gain. So what do we do about it? I said before if punishment isn†t going to stop police from becoming corrupt, what will? The first step to solving this â€Å"disease†, which is slowly eating away at public trust, is to acknowledge the problem. Managers on a whole use three different approaches when failing to deal with corruption. First, it is simply ignore the problem like it was never there. This approach is bad for many reasons. If the police can†t police themselves, someone will have to come in and do it for them. Public trust will never be gained. The second approach is a â€Å"pollyanna† mentality. This is where the manager discovers and finds the corruption, but downplays its total impact. This approach as with the first approach, will cause someone outside the agency to solve the problem. The third is the most lethal approach for the manager to take, one of a â€Å"cover-up†. Like the second, the manager discovers the corruption, but takes overt action to cover it up. Not only did the manager â€Å"condone† this behavior, but this will only lead to more corruption and abuse. This now enlarged corruption, will eventually lead to great public mistrust. A manager can overcome the problems with these approaches by assuming a realistic posture to this issue. This will allow the effects of the corruption to be less damaging to the agency. The next step to prevent corruption is to develop a plan of action. While no one plan will be foolproof it should include these three elements, recruitment, training, and investigation. As I previously stated, you have to come up with a definition of corruption to be used for your plans. I suggest everything from accepting a cup of coffee to the further most end of the spectrum be included. Using this definition stops people and managers from trying to decide what is across the line and what isn†t. If you try to â€Å"draw a line† this can create confusion and many people could rationalize situations as being OK. The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) defines corruption as acts involving the misuse of authority by a police officer in a manner designed to produce either personal gain or gain for others. With a definition like this everyone from the patrol officer to the Chief knows where they stand. The IACP created the Model for Management Corruption Prevention, in reaction to the corruption running rapid in the departments. This model covers the three basic elements which I mentioned previously recruitment, training, and investigation. Recruitment is the first step in this process. It goes without saying that no agency hires people who they know are corrupt. There are a multitude of reasons why agencies should â€Å"Weed out† bad recruits. Money is at the top of the list. All the training in which the recruit has to go through cost the taxpayers a lot of money. Many agencies have policies in which they hire only trained personnel so this cost can be eliminated. Selecting candidates which have already been on the job, shows supervisors a track record and therefor gives them more information. The use of the polygraph is a useful tool when â€Å"weeding out† candidates.. Training provides outstanding opportunity to make a anti-corruption plan work. It does this for a couple reasons. First training gets the message out with concern to standards. Second, this training allows the recruit to ask questions and to clarify his doubts about what is appropriate and what isn†t. Training is divided into two parts, recruit and in-service. The in-service training is a valuable tools because the recruit interacts with a seasoned officer and allows that recruit to ask questions about everyday events. The department must also watch the candidate for a probationary period of about six months. This programs is called the Field Training Officer (FTO) period. During this period of FTO the new recruit rides with a seasoned officer. Most agencies can release the recruit during this period for little or no cause. The department may also elect to send their recruits to a formal academic setting for training. This in turn will hopefully help the recruit in making the right decision when the question arises â€Å"Will I take it or won†t I? â€Å". The last stage of this three point training is investigation. This is the crucial elements to this whole program, without it everything else loses its ability to function. If the public knows the department will thoroughly investigate all reports of corruption, it will instill a confidence with the department. The investigation phase will most likely be conducted by the departments internal affairs unit. The IACP developed a model for departments to utilize. The first issue to be addressed is staffing. In small departments this could consist of only one person on a part time basis. In larger departments this unit could consist on many officers on a full time basis. If you are really concerned with the corruption within your department, you should consider having an outside agency investigate alleged corruption. This will ensure favoritism will not occur. Once you have decided with type of staffing is appropriate for your department, you should decide where in the department to place them. The best location for the unit to be is directly under the Chief. This will provide for a direct line of communication of the problems at hand. The Chief should provide a clear and definitive procedure for investigating alleged allegations of corruption. Theses procedures may include: 1. Handling all complaints quickly and impartially. 2. Explanation that the unit only handles facts, and doesn†t determine guilt of innocents. 3. Meticulous and accurate documentation is a must. 4. Responding to a crime scene immediately where an officer had to shoot a subject. In summary, police are human and have the same compulsions which others posses. This of course doesn†t excuse the corruption in the departments. When you think of corruption in the police field, remember that acts which are corrupt for one may not be corrupt for all. Every instance needs to be looked in to with great concern and objectiveness. If we don†t investigate every allegation we will loose the public trust and this will make it impossible to do the job effectively.
